Political Satire of TodayHere is a piece of satire in the form of a political cartoon created by Steve Kelley of the Creators website. The cartoon conveys the idea that guns are not the only form of killing people, through using a number of rhetorical devices the author illustrates the foolishness of the attempted changes to the 2nd amendment. For example, the cartoon uses verbal irony to convey the idea of the government trying to change the 2nd Amendment because they believe it will affect the rate of murder cases. The cartoon also uses dramatic irony because the audience knows that gun control is not going to affect the number of murders due to the many situations in which murder can be done. Another device used is wit because the character says “We’ve got to do something about guns,” when guns are clearly not the only form of killing a person which is seen throughout the different scenes. The cartoon displays a number of ways someone is able to be murdered yet rhetorically the gun gets the most recognition for killings. Through these devices the illustrator of this cartoon is showing that the ideas behind enforcing the new gun laws are foolish due to the idea of guns not being the only way to fix the number of murders in the US.
