The English Renaissance The English Renaissance, rebirth, started in Italy and traveled North, throughout Europe. There was the invention of the printing press, which spread ideas throughout Europe. Europe had many artistic achievements and many questions about religion.
The Renaissance began in the 1300s in Italy with the idea of humanism. Humanism was created by the sudden belief in human potential or a new attitude. Italians tried to base their society on those of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. Queen Elizabeth I, who was a poet and musician among other things, was the basis of how society should act. The Queen's courtiers found her irresistible. Leonardo da Vinci was another man that society believed strongly in. da Vinci was a sculptor, inventor, and artist, which brought upon the idea that he was the man that excelled at everything. In the 1580s, the sudden cultural boldness derived from the idea of humanism. William Shakespeare was a brilliant playwright who gave the public what they wanted, which was laughter, tears, and thrills. Shakespeare gave insight into the human struggle, showing the complexity and commonality. There was also the debate of religion. There was a lot of question about the Bible. It was believed that if the Bible were to be understood, it would need to be translated into the common languages. King James I translated the Bible, into what we know as the "King James version" or the "Authorized version", in 1611. With this translation, Christians were still able to question what their priests were teaching them. information source: Literature Launchers. Glencoe, Dvd. 2010. |
Crash Course: Did the Renaissance really happen? In John Green’s crash course on the Renaissance, he questions the existence of this event in history. The Renaissance essentially belonged to the 15th and 16th century, which was after the Dark Ages, and was able to see the rebirth of the European culture. If the Renaissance had in fact occurred, it would have spawned in Italy because they were very rich and could have supported the artists and other people involved. Although there were literary or artistic changes, people didn’t really seem to notice because it only affected a small amount of the European population. Whether or not it happened, it probably would have only been able to be experienced or noticed by the richest in society. It wasn’t really important to Europe because a majority of Europe didn’t notice much of a difference. It’s taught in history “because it matters to us now.” The Renaissance didn't just occur abruptly, it was a sequence of events that happened over centuries.

How Greek and Latin became part of the English language Most aren't aware that Latin and Greek are even apart of the English language unless they study anything having to do with medicine, science, or religion. The combination becomes apparent then because most medical terms or science terms derive from Latin/Greek. The Greek language has been around since the 4th century B.C.E. due to Alexander the Great. In fact, "alphabet" comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet, "alpha" and "beta". After the death of Alexander the Great, Rome began to replace Greek with their official language, which was Latin. Following this, Latin began to break off into other dialects, that became the Romance languages, such as: Spanish, French and Portuguese. English, which is much younger than the Greek and Latin languages, began about 1500 years after the disintegration of the Roman Empire. A century passed and Latin was introduced by Christian missionaries, allowing English to be written. Today, we continue to incorporate both Latin and Greek into the English language.

A tragedy, defined by Aristotle, is a work of dramatic art which is a depiction of the tragic figure(s) that tends to move the audience to "pity and fear". Oedipus Rex, written by Sophocles was a tragedy prototype. It was a play written about a man that is told by an oracle that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus runs from Corinth in fear of this oracle's message, which ultimately leads to him to do exactly was he was told. Although, Oedipus never gets relief from his agony, he is indeed a tragic figure because he realizes his actions and becomes responsible for them. De Casibus tragedies are 'teaching stories' rather than dramatic plays though because he uses a narrative structure instead of a dramatic structure. Shakespeare wrote ten tragedies and has a similar theme that everything is controlled by fortune. Shakespeare wrote his first tragedy in 1590, which was mediocre, as he was still in the process of perfecting his craft. However, Shakespeare's major themes involve one tragic figure rather than two and he has a straight structure. In conclusion, a tragedy involves tragic figures that endure a uncommon suffering, suffer a reversal of fortune, and recognize their actions; the tragedy all together moves the audience to feel pity for the figure and fear.

Shakespeare's Macbeth: The Lost Scene
According to Aristotle, certain situations have to happen, in order for a play to have a tragic hero. Aristotle states that the following must occur: there must be an uncommon suffering, a reversal of fortune, and lastly, they must recognize their actions and take responsibility. A tragic hero is considered as one that is not fully pure nor fully evil. Henceforth Macbeth is not considered a tragic hero, by Aristotle's terms. Macbeth never truly recognizes his actions, nor does he take responsibility for them. Furthermore, he turns purely evil when he voluntarily starts to murder or instigate murder. This "missing scene" helps the audience feel pity for Macbeth, when he realizes his actions have caused his beloved wife to go mad.
